The German wholesale merchant Heinrich Schliemann was a cosmopolitan and a genius. Or was he just a dreamer? He sees Homer´s epics mainly as works of art but reads them in his own way. Eventually, he excavates a seafarers´ realm from the Late Helladic period and becomes the father of Mycenaean archeology.
The world of Homer, on the other hand, falls into a later period – the time of meanders and vase painting ca. 800 B.C. that marks the transition between craftwork and visual art. To commemorate Homer´s legacy with contemporary imagery, and honor the achievements of the world-famous archeologist at the occasion of his 200th birthday, 65 artists from 30 countries came together and went on their own transcendental quest.
